USS ''Thrush'' (AM-18) was a acquired by the United States Navy for the dangerous task of removing mines from minefields laid in the water to prevent ships from passing.
''Thrush'' (Minesweeper No. 18) was laid down on 27 May 1918 at Wilmington, Delaware, by Pusey and Jones Co.; launched on 15 September 1918; sponsored by Mrs. J. E. Taylor; and commissioned on 25 April 1919, Lt. (jg.) P. T. Mayes in command.
== World War I mine clearance ==
Following shakedown, ''Thrush'' arrived in Kirkwall, Scotland, on 5 June and served with Squadron 3 of the Minesweeping Detachment which was busy clearing the North Sea Mine Barrage which had effectively contained the German Navy during World War I. Detached on 25 November, the minesweeper called at Brest, France, before returning to the United States.
